The word “shalom” stems from the word shalem, which means completeness and fullness. The completeness for which we pray every day at the end of the Amidah, the end of Birkat HaMazon, and in countless other tefillot refers to peace at three levels of human interaction— personal peace, communal peace, and national peace. We continually pray that God grants us the wisdom, the understanding, and the capabilities necessary to create perfect relationships, devoid of strife and replete with potential for growth, unity, and blessing.
