Makhtesh Ramon

Although commonly referred to as "Mitzpeh Ramon" ("Ramon Crater"), this breathtaking natural wonder in the heart of the Negev Desert is technically not a crater, but a "makhtesh": a geological depression formed by erosion. (Craters are typically created by impact, such as by a meteorite.) Makhtesh Ramon is not only the largest makhtesh of the five that exist in the Negev, it is also the largest makhtesh in the world. It is 25 miles long and 5 miles across at its widest point and is about 1,650 feet deep.
